Metallic ferromagnetism

In the conventional view of metallic ferromagnetism, it is driven by 'exchange energy' between conduction electrons in rigid bands. We have proposed an alternative way to understand the origin of ferromagnetism in metals, namely that it is driven by kinetic energy lowering, or equivalently effective mass reduction, or equivalently band broadening, or 'undressing' of carriers, that occurs upon spin polarization. The origin of the effect is bond-charge Coulomb repulsion between electrons. The following papers describe our work on the subject.
